Google Chrome OS brings printing to the cloud

The developers behind Google Chrome OS, the forthcoming cloud-enabled operating system from the internet giant, have explained how they are dealing with a key need for any computer – how well it plays with the printer.

With Chrome OS on course for arrival at the end of 2010, the details of how the operating system, which is all about cloud computing, will do familiar computing tasks are an increasingly important factor.

Chrome OS devices to cost under $400

Google CEO Eric Schmidt during the Atmosphere Cloud Computing Forum revealed that Chrome OS devices should be relatively inexpensive when they go on sale (video below). He estimated that they will cost between $300 and $400 and that all the cost will be associated with the hardware, since the OS itself is free. The most expensive part of the software is simply developing the web apps, Schmidt said.

Will Chrome OS deliver us the disposable PC?

During a visit to Google’s London HQ we grabbed some time with Chris DiBona.

He’s the Open Source Programs Manager for Google, overseeing everything the corporation does that’s open sourced and making sure it’s “correct and useful.”

We talked Google Chrome OS and, later, Android. We put to DiBona the issue that if users buy a netbook, they still tend to expect Windows on it, so will they take to Chrome OS?

So is ChromeOS a desktop winner?

When Google announced their ChromeOS there was a flurry of comment and opinion on what this could mean for the GNU/Linux user and the future of free software. Our esteemed editor, Tony Mobily made a bold statement (albeit framed as a question) at the time that Google’s ChromeOS could turn GNU/Linux into a “desktop winner”. I’m not sure that it’s true.

Google Chrome OS tablet concept revealed

Google could be developing its own rival to the Apple iPad, after an engineer at the search company posted a video online showing a mock-up of the Chrome operating system running on a tablet computer.
